Close the book before touching the site
Edition 02 ran thirty-seven pages and left its load-bearing decisions unmade: a primary face named on one page and the same face named as secondary three pages later, four voice example phrases printed as blanks, a logo page with no clearspace, no minimum size and no misuse rules. Everything it finished is carried across. Everything it left open is decided, one answer per page, and where the answer is a recommendation rather than the book's own call, the page says so and the colophon lists it.
Creative Direction Golden hour lives in the shadows; a golden cast lives in the highlights. Across the eight approved masters, red minus blue runs +13.0 in shadow, +11.4 in mid and +3.8 in highlight, warm in the shadows in seven of the eight. Both source documents were satisfied at once. Two frames fall outside the rule and the book prints neither: skygarden goes cool in the mid, and restaurant inverts to a cool shadow under a +40.3 highlight. Turn every adjective into a test
A rule written as an adjective cannot be checked on a frame, which is why two people could both follow edition 02 and disagree. Warm and golden became a red-minus-blue reading across the approved masters. Room around the mark became a gap measured against the letter L. The sand is legible became a contrast ratio printed on every step of the ramp. Two of the three came back failing, which is the point: a rule that cannot fail was never a rule.
Creative Content QA & Ideation The eighth way was found on this book's own cover. The cover sets its BRAND BOOK line at 100 pt and leaves an 11.2 pt gap where the L measures 36.5 pt, so it clears 0.31 of what the rule asks and is short by 25.3 pt. The sheet prints the failure beside the rule instead of reshooting the cover. A misuse page assembled from hypotheticals teaches nobody anything; one that catches its own author is a rule with teeth. - 03

The misuse page lists eight ways the mark breaks, and the eighth was found on this book's own cover: it clears 0.31 of the clearspace the rule asks for and is short by 25.3 points. The sheet prints that failure next to the rule instead of reshooting the cover. A misuse page assembled from hypotheticals teaches nobody anything. One that catches its own author is a rule with teeth.

A pass over the whole ramp found step 500 carrying body text at 3.3 to 1, under AA, on the least-read text in the book. The fix was a new text-only token at 6.12 to 1, not a retuned step: step 500 is printed on this very page, and retuning it would have made the book lie about its own palette. Every one of the 20 distinct colour-on-ground pairs now clears AA. - 04

Build the page on the frozen book
The first build drew the book's rules in the live site's surface. Looked at, it read as the live site with the sections rearranged, which is the one outcome a direction mockup cannot have, so it was overturned and rebuilt on the book's own surface. Everything on the page now traces to a book page by number: the ground and ink from page 12, the blue plate as the single named exception from page 13, the mark and clearspace rules from page 09, the six type roles from page 14.

The book first, then the page
The original plan had the website first and the book as an optional tail. That is the expensive order, because the book's blank pages and the site's design system are the same set of decisions, and doing them twice means relitigating the first set the moment the second exists. Deciding once, in the book, then freezing it and building against it, removes the duplication. It also means the architecture argument happens after the type and the palette exist rather than before.

Show the product in use
The live site was measured rather than characterised: twelve sections, nine of them arguing the company or its category, the product shown in use zero times. So the mockup follows one mechanism the whole way down instead of listing nine features. Sleep is the one thing the home can improve without asking anyone to wear anything, and it gets four steps: it notices, it adjusts, it learns the baseline, it speaks up early.

Both go-to-market approaches on the same screen
The product arrives two different ways depending on who is buying and when: a retrofit into a home that already has a smart home in it, or a spec written off-plan across a whole development. They were being explained separately and were reading as two products. They are drawn as a pair, on one screen, with a three-row table that answers what each one fits, what it sits on and what it covers.

The specimen sheet reads the page rather than describing it
A component sheet carrying a number typed beside each specimen goes on passing its own audit while documenting a build that no longer exists. That happened here: the surface decision was overturned the same day it was built and the sheet did not notice. It now loads the page into a hidden same-origin iframe, finds the real element behind each of twenty atoms by selector, and reads its computed style. Change either side and the sheet goes red.
